TDS supported a Central Government-sponsored arms length body in deploying and operating a high-public-profile payments platform, providing hands-on AWS cloud engineering and DevOps expertise across a microservices-based delivery programme.
The Challenge
The programme needed to deploy a payments platform built from multiple microservices-based components, under significant public scrutiny, with the reliability, security and scalability such a service demands. Alongside this, a separate commercial workflow platform needed to be deployed and integrated, each requiring resilient, auditable deployment pipelines and safe, repeatable environments for ongoing testing and change.
Solution and Implementation
Strategic Approach
TDS deployed the payments platform’s microservices-based components onto Amazon EKS, using RDS for data persistence, an Application Load Balancer (ALB) for traffic management, and a Web Application Firewall (WAF) for protection against common web exploits. Deployment used modern DevOps methods, implementing CI/CD pipelines that, in some workstreams, enabled developers to carry out self-service deployments — reducing bottlenecks and improving delivery velocity. In parallel, TDS deployed a commercial workflow platform onto EKS using a similar CI/CD approach, including ephemeral test environments and custom workflow code to support safe, repeatable testing.
Key Deliverables
- Microservices-based payments platform deployed onto AWS EKS with RDS, ALB and WAF
- CI/CD pipelines enabling self-service deployment for developers in some workstreams
- Commercial workflow platform deployed onto EKS with supporting CI/CD pipelines
- Ephemeral test environments and custom workflow code for the workflow platform
Results and Outcomes
- A high-profile government payments platform deployed and operated on a modern, secure AWS architecture
- Improved delivery velocity through self-service CI/CD deployment
- Safer, more repeatable testing enabled through ephemeral test environments
- A parallel commercial workflow platform successfully integrated alongside the payments service
